Biography
Actor, director, screenwriter.
Rubini, son of a station master, was born in Grumo Appula (Bari). In 1978, after obtaining a scientific high school diploma, he moved to Rome to attend the Silvio D’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts.
In the early 1980s he started working with theatre directors such as Antonio Calenda, Gabriele Lavia, Enzo Siciliano, Franco Però and Ennio Coltorti.
In 1985, after some exprerience as a radio director, he made his big screen debut as lead actor in “My Dearest Son”, directed by Valentino Orsini. In 1987, Federico Fellini casted him as the lead actor in his film “Intervista” and in the same year he appeared in Giuseppe Piccioni’s first work, “Il Grande Blek”.
It is during this period that he collaborated with playwright Umberto Marino appearing in some of his plays, such as: "The Station", "Perché avrei dovuto sposare Angela Marvulli", "Il sax", "Non mi chiamo Ramon e non ho mai organizzato un golpe alle Maracas", "Ce n’est qu’un début". As director and actor, he worked in “Italia-Germania 4 a 3” (1987) etc.
Among the stage works of those years, two authors that he introduced to Italy for the first time deserve a special mention: “American Buffalo” by David Mamet in which he appeared as interpreter, and “La notte è la madre del giorno” by Lars Noren in which he is interpreter and director. In 1989, following the meeting with a young producer, Domenico Procacci, he made his debut as a director with “The Station", a film based on the play by Umberto Marino, winning several awards, including: Silver Tape, David of Donatello, Globo d’oro, Grolla d’Oro, Ciak D’Oro, and in 1990, at the 47th Venice International Film Festival, the Kodak-Cinecritica and the FIPRESCI (The International Federation of Film Critics) Best Film award at the International Critics’ Week.
As a director and screenwriter, he has directed the following films: "The station", "The Blonde", "A pure formality", "The bride’s journey", "Tutto l’amore che c’è, Soul mate", "Love returns", 'At a glance", "I’ll be back", "The Cézanne affair", "Let’s talk", "The great spirit", "I fratelli De Filippo".
As an actor, he has worked with authors such as Federico Fellini, Giuseppe Piccioni, Sergio Citti, Carlo Verdone, Giuseppe Tornatore, Francesca Archibugi, Michele Placido, Gabriele Salvatores, Giovanni Veronesi, Alessandro D'Alatri, Susanna Nicchiarelli and Paolo Genovese.
He has also acted in international productions such as: "The Talented Mr. Ripley" by Anthony Minghella, "Mirka" by Rachid Benhadj, "The Passion of the Christ" by Mel Gibson, "The Story of my Wife" by Ildikó Enyedi. Also active for the small screen, he has worked with Josèe Dayan in "The Count of Monte Cristo", "Balzac" and "The Countess of Castiglione", and in the TV miniseries of Fabrizio Costa, "Sacco e Vanzetti".
He occasionally collaborates as a teacher at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts "Silvio D'Amico" and the Experimental Center of Cinematography.
