Over the years, I have always tried to listen to the moods of my fellow citizens, even those I loved the least, trying to give my work a sense not of preaching but of understanding, of compassion, looking them straight in the eye. Perhaps the most gratifying acknowledgement I received came from the critic Tullio Kezich, who wrote in one of his last reviews: "Orlando gives up being an actor to be our brother", which is what I think an actor should be, our brother whom we can detest, with whom we can also quarrel, but whom we cannot help but love.
